HopLAX Program Overview - FAQs
The Hopkinton Youth Lacrosse program is open to boys who are Hopkinton residents and are in grades K through 8, (the Girl's Lacrosse program of Hopkinton is a separate organization). The program is built around participation in the Mass Youth Lacrosse (MYL) league.
What are the age groups?
There are four age groups:
U9 - Grades 1 & 2
U11 - Grades 3 & 4
U13 - Grades 5 & 6
U15 - Grades 7 & 8
We also offer a Kindergarten program that teaches the basic fundamentals of the game. The K program will run on Saturdays at the Fruit Street turf from mid April through early June (no workout on Memorial Day weekend) from 8:00 - 9:00am. No games are played and full equipment is not required. Players will run fun drills with just a lacrosse stick. Kindergarten workouts are run on early Saturdays so conflicts with other sports will be minimalized.
What is the Winter Skills Program?
This is a one night per week, five-week program that runs in January through February. This program focuses on giving players in grades 1 through 4 a chance to continue to develop their skills during the winter months. This program is run at Forekicks in Marlborough and requires a separate registration fee from the spring season. This program is not required for participation in the spring league; however, it is strongly recommended for new or developing players to help get them prepared for the spring season.
March Indoor Training Sessions:
As part of your spring registration, all HopLAX teams will have weekly indoor workouts during the month of March at Forekicks in Marlboro. These sessions are great for getting the boys ready for the season.
When is the regular season?
Registration takes place in November so that our program admins can register the appropriate number of teams with our league. Outdoor practices generally start in late March/early April. Actual games generally begin by the first week of April and run through early June. Please note that there are often games during April vacation weekends.
Who do we play?
All of our teams are "travel teams" in that we play other towns both home and away. The opponents are generally close in proximity to Hopkinton.
My son has never played lacrosse before ... is it too late for him to start?
No. Every year we have first time players in every grade from 1st through 8th. If your son would like to give lacrosse a try, he should.
When are the practices?
There are one to two practices per week for all age groups. Practices are usually held in the late afternoon or evening hours during the week.
Can my son play spring baseball or soccer and play lacrosse as well?
Yes. We have many players, especially at the younger age levels, that play multiple sports in the spring. There will be conflicts that need to be managed but we believe that with open communication between coach and families, most of these conflicts can be worked through.
When are the games?
MYL games are played on Sundays. Start times range from 9am to 6pm. In rare instances, a makeup game can be scheduled for during the week.
